New Bank Notes to Honour Nelson Mandela
On the 13th of July 2018, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) honoured Nelson Mandela by issuing new banknotes’ featuring the latter’s historic life. This is the first time SARB has released commemorative bank notes in the history of South Africa.
The notes were released in advance of what would have been Nelson Mandela’s birthday this Wednesday the 18th of July 2018. The bank notes and the coins tell the story of Nelson Mandela’s life. The notes demonstrate his life from humble beginnings in Mvezo to his quest for justice in Soweto.
This was the Reserve Bank’s (SARB) method of paying tribute to the iconic hero. Nelson Mandela’s bravery when he was incarcerated during the apartheid period deserves recognition.
The sense of humanity that he showed at his inauguration at the Union building is immortalised on the R 200 note.
Bank Notes and their features
- The R10 note– consist of the rolling hills of Eastern Cape Comprising of Madiba’s humble and meek birthplace of Mvezo.
- The R20 note– This note comprises of Mandela’s hometown Soweto. The iconic town is where he embarked on his political journey along with other ANC struggle icons.
- The R50 note– the note comprises the place where Madiba was arrested near Howick after months of hiding.
The R100 note shows Mandela’s spell in Robben Island and all the suffering he went through.
Furthermore, the R200 note has a face when Madiba greeted the nation after he became the first black statesman of the country.
The 5R coin has a face of Madiba smiling to the country he sacrificed his blood, sweat and tears for.
