Luka Modric Named FIFA Best Player of the year
An eventful night in London witnessed Luka Modric being named FIFA Best Player of the Year. The Croatian maestro scooped the most prestigious award in football ahead of Messi, Ronaldo and Mo Salah.
The Real Madrid midfielder enjoyed what can be called the best season of his career. This came after leading Croatia to their first World Cup final along with lifting the UEFA Champion’s trophy with Real Madrid. Luka Modric won his third consecutive Uefa Champions League trophy after Real Madrid beat Juventus 4-1.
Luka Modric’s prolific displays in the middle of the park for both his team and country clearly show that he was the deserving candidate
Some might argue that Cristiano who did not attend the awards night was the deserving candidate. The argument is that the Portuguese international scored a lot of goals for his club and that lead to Real Madrid to win the European Cup.
However, another argument is that Ronaldo’s world cup performance did not match that of Luka Modric. Therefore the Croatian was an undisputed deserving candidate after his national team made it through to the World Cup finals.
Ever since he departed Tottenham Hotspurs in 2012 he has become one of the most dynamic players of his generation. He has shown the world what a brilliant player he is in a couple of years and on Monday the hard work paid off.
Luka Modric Named in the FIFA World XI
Furthermore, after claiming all the notable awards in football it’s not a surprise that Luka is in the FIFA World XI. FIFA made five changes to the other team which was selected in 2017. Kylian Mbappe was included in the World XI after becoming the youngest best player at FIFA World Cup in Russia. And leading France to be the world champions.
The Egyptian Mo Salah did not make it to the World XI. But he also had something celebrate on the night. Salah was awarded the Puskas Award for the goal he scored against Everton in the Premier League last season.
