William Larue Weller whisky2019 World Whisky of the Year – William Larue Weller 128.2 Proof

2019’s winner is the William Larue Weller. This whisky is part of the highly anticipated annual Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. Each year, the collection releases 4 expressions. These include the William Larue Weller, Thomas H. Hardy Rye, the Eagle Rare 17-year-old, Sazerac Rye 18-year-old, and George T. Stagg. Each of these releases comes from a different batch. The blend varies depending mainly on the casks.
This year’s winner is a wheated bourbon. The bourbon was distilled back in 2015 and then released in 2017. This year’s William Larue Weller was named after a distiller who’s the 1st to replace rye with wheat in the mash bill. It’s smooth and it’s soft. It bursts with caramel, vanilla and marshmallow notes. Spice and pepper enter on the palate. Unfortunately, this release is already sold out.

Second Finest Whisky in the World – Glen Grant Aged 18 Years

The Glen Grant 18 is the only Scotch to make it into the top 4. This scotch has also featured on Murray’s top 3 in 3 consecutive years (2017, 2018, and 2019). This complex drink brings forth dried fruits, winter spice, and a lot of caramel on the nose.

Third Finest Whisky in the World – Thomas Handy Sazerac Rye 127.2 Proof

The Thomas Handy Sazerac Rye also made it into the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. Like the William Larue Weller, it’s already sold out. The Thomas H. Handy is a favourite in the rye community, disappearing from the shelves quite quickly. It bursts with notes on cinnamon, dried fruit, toffee and molasses.

The Blanton’s Gold Edition Single Barrel is a brand known far and wide in the bourbon industry, and it’s a winner. Sadly, they are very hard to find.
